"لا يزال الفوهرر حيًّا ويقود الدفاع فى برلين". غير أنه لم يعد لدى الفوهرر ما يقوده وأصبح موته فى حكم المقرّر. غاص فى مقعده الوثير وتداعت إلى ذهنه من بعيد ذكريات علاقته بـموسوللينى؛ حلوها ومرّها. كان يخشاه ويكرهه عندما تم قتل دولفوس، غير أنه شعر بتقدير بالغ له عندما قام بدعمه فى ميونخ أثناء مشكلة السوديت. كم رغب فى شنقه، عندما عرف أنه على اتصال بالفرنسيين والإنجليز مع بداية الحرب. بيد أنه لم يلبث أن شكر له استمرار وفائه للمحور، وامتناعه عن فتح جبهة ثانية عليه. ثم شعر بالسخط عليه عندما ظهر ضعف الجيوش الإيطالية فى حرب اليونان وشمال أفريقيا! إلا أنه تعاطف معه، عندما تم إقصاؤه عن السلطة واحتجازه بجبال الغران ساسو.
عندما بدأت محاكمة وجوه النازية فى نوفمبر 1945، لم يتبق من المدينة التاريخية الثرية إلا 110 مبنى سليماً. فقد هدم قصف الحلفاء جميع مظاهر النازية، وأتى على كل ما اجتمع فى تلك البقعة من مبانٍ تاريخية وفنية على مدى قرون تاريخية. لكن هناك مبانى ظلت صامدة، مثل قصر العدالة ذى الطوابق الثلاثة، وأروقة شديدة الاتساع؛ كما سلم من القصف أيضًا الجزء الغربى منه، الذى على هيئة نصف قطر، ويضم زنزانات حجز المتهمين.
