تتحدث رواية "الوصية الحمراء" للكاتب الشهير "كزافييه دي مونتبين" عن "الكونت دي توتوريو" وهو من كبار النبلاء - أغنياء فرنسا - في القرن الثامن عشر (1879). تعد ثروته بالملايين، وقد فقد إمرأته وابنته الوحيدة وكان يحبهما حباً لا يوصف، فبات حزيناً، وقبل وفاته كتب وصيته الحمراء المؤلفة من عشرة بنود، وأهم ما في هذه البنود التي احتوتها الوصية أنه ترك أموالاً لكل طفل ولد مع ابنته في ذلك العام، ولكن يبدو أن هناك سراً وراء هذه الوصية، التي كتبت بالحبر الأحمر تحت حروف وكلمات فإذا استطاع الورثة جمع هذه الحروف والكلمات التي تألفت من ثلاثة أسطر فإنهم سيستطيعون معرفة موضع المال؟!
