يعد هذا الكتاب من الكتب النقدية الممتعة والهامة، والمنصفة للمؤلف علي بن عبدالعزيز الجرجاني، وقد وضعه للتوسط بين خصوم المتنبي ومحبيه، وذكر فيه أن قوماً مالوا إليه، حتى فضلوه في الشعر على جميع أهل زمانه، وقوماً لم يعدوه من الشعراء حتى قالوا: إنه لا ينطق إلا بالهوى؛ ولم يتكلم إلا بالكلمة العوراء، ومعانيه كلها مسروقة. فتوسط الجرجاني بين الخصمين، وذكر الحق من القولين.
وليس كتاب الوساطة مختصا بشعر المتنبي كما يفهم من عنوانه، بل إنه عرض للأصول الأدبية التي عرفت في عصره، وحلل أشعار القدماء والمحدثين؛ وأورد كثيرا من محاسنهم وعيوبهم، وأبان ما شاع فيها من تعقيد وغموض، وأخذٍ وسرقة، واستعارة حسنة أو رديئة، ثم عرض للبيئة وأثرها في الشعر والبداوة وما تحدثه من جفوة في الطباع، والحضارة وما ينشأ عنها من رقة وسهولة، ثم عرض لخصوم المتنبي وأنصاره، ومعانيه المأخوذة أو المخترعة... كل ذلك وغيره أورده في أسلوب واضح، وعرض شامل
