عبد الوهاب بن حريش الأعرابي أبو محمد، الملقب بـ أبي مسحل، من بني ربيعة، من عامر بن صعصعة: راوية غزير العلم باللغة، عارف بالنحو والقراآت. من أهل نجد. تعلم وأقام ببغداد وأكثر الأخذ عن الكسائي. واتصل بالحسن بن سهل وزير المأمون. وهو من شيوخ ثعلب.

يعتبر هذا الكتاب لأبي مسحل الأعرابي من أقد الكتب اللغوية ويعد من الأصول اللغوية النفيسة، ويرجع زمن تأليفه إلى نهاية القرن الثاني الهجري أو بداية القرن الثالث. ويقول محقق الكتاب: وكتاب النوادر هذا كتاب في اللغة ، والمادة اللغوية الواردة فيه تمثل لغة البادية في الجاهلية وصدر الإسلام في ألفاظها وعباراتها وأساليبها تمثيلا جيدا .. والكتاب بمجموعه أثبت وأوسع نص لغوي وصل إلينا عن المرحلة الأولى لجمع اللغة وتدوينها، في بدء ازدهار الحضارة العربية.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا بعضه مروي عن ثعلب وهو في قسمين، وهو أكثره، وقسم مروي إسحاق بن زياد بن الأعرابي، وهو أقله، وقسم منه مروي عن أبي عبد الرحمن أحمد بن سهل صاحب أبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام، فتكون الأقسام أربعة.
