تشكل رواية المنطقة الخضراء للروائي شاكر نوري رحلة في تاريخ العراق وتراثه، تقتحم العوالم السرية للمنطقة الخضراء في بغداد والكيفية التي يتعامل بها الأميركان والعرب في تلك المنطقة؛ تتصارع فيها حيوات خمسة مترجمين عراقيين (إبراهيم بطل الرواية، ومراد ورشيد وكامل وفيفيان) يعملون مع المحتل الأميركي، الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى اصطدام ثقافتين/ ثقافة غازية مدمرة، وثقافة عربية عراقية أصيلة. يعبر الروائي عن ذلك بقصتي حب متوازيتين بين إبراهمي وفيفيان من ناحية وبين الكولونيل داود الأميركي ومدام بيتي العراقية التي صارت مسؤولة عن المترجمين العاملين مع الجيش الأميركي من ناحية أخرى، كذلك تدور الرواية دورة حول الرقص والموسيقى الراب التي يمارسها الجنود المارينز الذين يشكلون فرقة عسكرية تقوم بعمليات التفتيش عند إحدى بوابات المنطقة الخضراء، من بينهم: نيل وباتشلور وجيمي وريتشارد وباتيسا، الذين بدوا في الرواية يملكون مواقفا ضد الحرب، أما إبراهيم بطل الرواية الذي وقع في حب فيفيان، ما يلبث أن يقع في حالة من المساومة على محبوبته التي يختطفها مسلحون مجهولون، الذين يطلبون منه العمل معهم ... إلى آخر ذلك من صراعات هي جزء من تاريخ العراق الحديث تناولتها الرواية...
