يعتَبَرُ هذا الكتاب من أجَلِّ الكُتُب عند فقهاء المالكية، كما يُعَدّ أصلاً من أصول المذهب عندهم، فهو ثاني أمهات المصادر في الفقه المالكي بعد الموطأ، وكلُّ ما جاء بعده من مصنفات المذهب عيال عليه، فعليه الاعتماد في الفتوى والأحكام والقضاء، وأكثرُ علماء المالكية يتلقون ما جاء في المدونة بالقَبول، فهي عندهم أصدق رواية، وأعلى درجة من حيث سماعها وروايتها، فهو مقدمٌ على ما سواه من مصنفات المذهب، ولا يُعدَلُ عنه إلى غيره. ثم اصطلح المالكية على تسميته بـالمُدَوّنة الكُبرى، والكتاب، والأم، فإذا وُجِدَتْ هذه الأسماءُ في كُتُب المالكية؛ فهم يَعنُون بها المُدَوّنة.
وتتألف المدونة من أسئلة وأجوبة عن مسائل الفقه وردت للإمام مالك، وقد بلغت 6200 مسألة، مرتبة على أبواب الفقه، وقد تضمنها رواية الإمام مالك عن الصحابة والتابعين، لذلك تعتبر أصحّ كتب الفروع في الفقه المالكي رواية.
وقد قام بجمعها وتهذيبها وترتيبها وتذييلها بالآثار عبدُ السلام بن سعيد التّنوخي المُلَقّب بسَحْنُون (160-240ﻫ) روايةً عن أبي عبد الله عبد الرحمن بن القاسم العُتَقي (132-191ﻫ) عن الإمام مالك بن أنس (93-179ﻫ). فهي تجمع آراء الإمام مالك بن أنس المروية عنه، والمُخَرّجة على أصوله، كما تتضمن آراء بعض أصحابه، مع بعض الآثار والأحاديث.
