المجاعة الكبرى تأليف :: محمد سعيد غازي جزء من مقدمة الكتاب … وماذا لو كنت تعيش فى هذا الزمن الذى اكل فية الناس القطط والكلاب ونبشوا القبورواشتد بهم الجوع وخطف الخبز من على رءوس الخبازين وانتشر الوباء..ووقع في الناس المرض والموت .وهاجرت النساء للعراق والشام وكن يبعن أنفسهن لقاء وجبة طعام أو رغيف خبز..واضطر بعض أعيان الدولة ان يخدموا الناس لقاء كسرة خبز.. كما بيعت حارة بأكملها مكونة من عشرين دارا بطبق من الطعام حتى سميت بحارة الطبق.. وأكل الناس الجيف والميتة..ثم عمدوا إلى القطط والكلاب يذبحونها ثم يأكلونها..حتى اصبحت سلعة نادرة وارتفع ثمنها فبيع الكلب , بخمسة دنانير والقطة بثلاثة دنانير..ثم أكلوا الروث والحيوانات النافقة فنتشر فيهم المرض واصبح الموت فى كل مكان, وكان يخرج من القاهرة كل يوم ما بين مائة إلى خمسمائة جنازة.. وأما البيوات والدكاكين فقد خلا معظمها بعد ان مات اصحابها ومن كثرة الموت والعدد عجزوا زويهم عن دفنهم فكانوا يلقوان بيهم فى الشوارع والطرقات ثم اصابهم الموت هم ايضا ولم يجدوا من يدفنهم فبقوا في البيوات والدكاكين..وأما الضواحي والقرى فهلك اكثرأهلها إلا من شاء الله..والمسافر يمر بالقرية فلا يرى فيها انسان, و البيوت مفتحة وأهلها موتى فيها ولم يبقى فى قرى وكفور ونجوع كاملة بيت مسكون
