قرأت لكثير من الشعراء في العصور المتعاقبة ولكنى كنت ولازلت أردد أن العبقرية هى المتنبي، والعبقرية هى شوقى وبينهما ألف عام وبينهما آلاف الشعراء. وعندما توجهت إلى هذين العلمين الشامخين، شعرت بالرهبة دون الخوف، وبالتأنى دون التردد، وبالزهو دون الغرور، وكيف لا، فالكتابة عنهما شرف وأى شرف.
وكنت قد لاحظت تشابها بين هذين العبقريين في كثير من ظروف عصريهما وسلوكهما في الحياة فعصر المتنبي كان عصر اضطراب وفتن (القرن الرابع الهجري في حكم الدولة العباسية). كما كان عصر شوقي عصر اضطراب في الحكم بعد فشل الثورة العرابية سنة 1882 واحتلال الإنجليز لمصر ثم إعلان الحماية البريطانية عليها. وفي هذا العصر أيضاً انهارت الخلافة الإسلامية في تركيا، وسقطت الدول العربية الإسلامية تحت نير الإحتلال.
وكما كان عصر المتنبي من عصور الأدب الزاهرة، كان هناك أيضاً نهضة أدبية رفيعة في الوطن العربي في عصر شوقي فظهر البارودي وإسماعيل صبري وحافظ إبراهيم وبشارة الخوري والمويلحي والمنفلوطي وطه حسين والعقاد وجبران وغيرهم. ولكن المتنبي وشوقي كانا على قمة عصريهما، لم يرق إليهما أحداً، فاقت شهرتهما أفاق الدولة الإسلامية، المتنبي كان سلطاناً غير متوج وشوقى كان أميراً لشعراء العربية.
