Book Description
ولد أبو الطيب أحمد بن الحسين الجعفي بالكوفة في محلة يقال لها كندة. وكان شاعراً مغلقاً شديد العارضة راجح العقل عظيم الذكاء، قدم الشام في صباه واشتغل في فنون الأدب ولقي في رحلته كثيراً من أيمة العلم فتخرج عليهم وأخذ عنهم. وكان من المطلعين على أوابد اللغة وشواردها حتى إنه لم يُسأل عن شيء إلا استشهد له بكلام العرب من النظم والنثر.
وقد سمي بالمتنبي لأنه ادعى النبوة في بادية السماوة من أعمال الكوفة. أحب المتنبي سيف الدولة وعني بمدحه في الكثير من أشعاره، إلا أنه ما لبث أن غضب منه؛ وانصرف إلى مدح كافور الأخشيدي، وبعد ذلك إلى هجاءه بعدة قصائد مشهورة. وقد ضمّ هذا الكتاب من سلسلة "ديوان العرب" مختلف القصائد التي نظمها المتنبي، مضافاً إليها بعض الشروحات لمعاني المفردات التي يصعب تحديد معناها.
