كأحد مواليد القاهرة عام 1932 كان من الطبيعى وقد بلغت العاشرة أن تكون كلمة «الإنجليز» قد استقرت فى وعى بمفهوم غامض مقلق وغير مريح، يرتبط ذلك بلقطات عديدة احتفظت بها الذاكرة لجنس غريب يجوس خلال طرقات العاصمة تميزهم وجوههم الحمراء وعيونهم الزرقاء .. فى ذلك الوقت لم أستوعب معنى كونهم مستعمرين بقدر ما استوعبت أنهم أجانب مختلفون، وآنذاك راودنى السؤال: ما الذى جاء بهم ولماذا جاءوا؟ ولم أجد الإجابة فى حينه ولم أهتم، فالسؤال كان يلمع فجأة ثم يختفى سريعا.
