كان للطيور دوراً فاعلاً ومهماً جداً في العديد من الحكايات في الموروث الديني والشعبي، وقد وصل الأمر في بعض الثقافات القديمة إلى تقديسها واعتبارها رموزاً للقوة، إذ أن الكثير من الرسومات الفرعونية كانت تُظهر رجالاً برأس صقر أو نسر، وهذا يُعدّ دلالةً رمزية تعبر عن تأثير الطيور الكبير الذي يترك انطباعاً قوياً في ذهن الشعوب. لم يغب ذكر الطيور عن خاطر الشعراء والأدباء، فقد ذُكرت في الكثير من القصائد والقصص والخواطر وحتى في الأغنيات، إذ أن الأدباء يربطون بينها وبين المشاعر المتدفقة ويعتبرونها مرسالاً بينهم وبين الحبيب، لذلك ساهمت في إثراء الأدب بصورةٍ جميلة ومحببة إلى النفس، وجعل الناس لكل طائرٍ رمزاً، فالناس مثلاً ربطوا طائر الغراب بالأخبار السيئة والفأل السيء، وربطوا طائر البوم بالتشاؤم، وربطوا الحمامة بالسلام وجعلوها رمزاً له، وغير ذلك الكثير
