تروي "الغاب" القصة المأساوية لجرجس رودكس، الفلاح الليتواني ومجموعة من أقربائه وأصدقائه، وكلهم من المهاجرين، الذين عاشوا واشتغلوا وماتوا في منطقة المسلخ، وفي العمل يتعرض لنظام تسريح وحشي لا يرحم يسبب له إصابات بالأذى، كما يصاب هو وأفراد عائلته بأمراض فظيعة، ثم يطرد من العمل، ويدرج في القائمة السوداء.
بعدئذ يساق إلى السجن ظلماً وجوراً لتهشيمه وجه رئيسه البربري المعتدي، وهكذا، واحداً إثر الآخر ينسحق جرجس ومجموعته: فكبار السن منهم يلقون على كومة النفاية ليموتوا جوعاً، والنساء يتحولن إلى عاهرات كي يجدن ما يسد رمقهن، وزوجة جرجس التي تشرف على ولادتها قابلة جاهلة تموت بسبب نقص الرعاية، وابنه يغرق في إحدى برك الماء الآسن المحيطة بكوخه الخرب، ولا يوفر سينكلير مكاناً من روايته إلا ويقدم فيه لقارئه المندهش صوراً واقعية مما رآه من قذارات المسالخ ونتنها وقسوة الحياة فيها.
تقارن رواية "الغاب" بكتابات تولستوي وروائيي القرن التاسع عشر الروس الآخرين، وبأعمال روائيين فرنسيين مثل زولا في تشاؤميتها الكاملة، حالة اليأس الأسود الذي يطغى عليها والمأساة التي لا خلاص منها.
