«والشَّكُّ، هَذا الشُّعاعُ الخَفِيُّ الَّذِي لا يُمكِنُ إذا تَسَلَّطَ أنْ تَصْمُدَ لَه أَقْوى الحَقائِقِ وأَكثَرُها صَلابةً ورُسُوخًا، ذلِكَ الشَّكُّ الَّذِي بَدَأَ عَلى هَيْئةِ تَساؤُلٍ خَطَرَ لِسناءَ بَعْدَ ظُهرِ ذلِكَ اليَوْم، لمْ يَلْبَثْ بمُضِيِّ بِضعَةِ أيَّامٍ أَنِ اجْتاحَ كلَّ آراءِ سَناءَ ومُعْتقَداتِها وحَقَائِقِها الصُّلْبةِ الرَّاسِخَة.»
«العَيْبُ» في مُجْتمعِنا الشَّرْقيِّ هوَ كُلُّ ما يُخالِفُ القِيَمَ الاجْتِماعِيةَ الَّتِي ارْتَضاها العَقْلُ الجَمْعِيُّ للمُجْتمَع. وفِي قِصَّتِهِ هذِهِ يُدِينُ يوسف إدريس المُجْتمَعَ باعْتِبارِهِ مَسْئولًا عمَّا وَصَلتْ إلَيْهِ حالُ المَرْأةِ المِصْرِية. تَرَبَّتْ «سَناءُ» في ظِلِّ أُسْرةٍ تَحْترِمُ قِيَمَ الشَّرَف، وتَخَرَّجتْ في الجامِعةِ حامِلةً لِواءَ الشَّرَفِ والعِفَّة، ثم قَادَتْها الأقْدارُ لِتَكُونَ معَ أَرْبعٍ مِنْ زَمِيلاتِها مِن أوائلِ النساءِ اللاتي يَعمَلنَ فِي المَصالِحِ الحُكُومِيَّة، وهُنالِكَ تُدْرِكُ «سَناءُ» وُجودَ عَالَمٍ آخَرَ يُوازِي عالَمَ القِيَم، عالَمٍ كلُّ شَيْءٍ فِيهِ يُباعُ مُقابِلَ المَال، فلَمْ تَنْجُ «سَناءُ» مِنَ التَّحَرُّشِ المُسْتَمِرِّ مِن زَمِيلِها «مُحمَّد الجندي» عَلى الرَّغمِ مِن كَثْرةِ شِكايَتِها مِنْه، ولكِنْ هَلْ يُمكِنُ أنْ تَنْأى بِنَفسِها عَنِ الرَّشْوَة؟
