ظل يوسف إدريس شاغلاً للحياة الثقافية والأدبية والسياسية ما يزيد عن الأربعة عقود من الزمان، وذلك منذ انفجرت موهبته العاصفة عام 1950، ونشر قصته الأولى "أنشودة الغرباء"، ثم توالت قصصه فيما بعد، ثم نشر مجموعته القصصية الأولى "أرخص ليالي" عام 1954، ليصبح في مقدمة صفوف كتاب القصة القصيرة بشكل مطلق في مصر والعالم العربي، ويحدث استقطاب عام، للدرجة التي أضرت كتاب الجيل الذي سبقه، وبالتالي كتاب جيله الذين أصبحوا شبه مستبعدين عن المشهد الأدبي تماماً، وساعدت العلاقات القوية بين إدريس والسلطة السياسية على تعميق وتعميم وجوده الأدبي في الثقافة المصرية والعربية والعالمية، وكرست تلك الظاهرة للكاتب الأوحد، وللكاتب الظاهرة، والكاتب الأسطورة، ودون ذلك لا شيء، ولا ظاهرة دونه، ليصبح يوسف إدريس ظاهرة فريدة من نوعها في التاريخ الأدبي والثقافي المصري والعربي.
