إن السياق الأصلي لهذا الكتاب ما هو إلا قراءة في يومية الحرب للقيادة العامة للقوات المصرية في فلسطين. حيث تظهر هذه الصفحات للقارئ أن يومية الحرب عاجزة وحدها عن وصف مرحلة جديدة من الصراع حيث أن ميدان القتال لم يعد، كما في بداية الحرب "الإسرائيلية الفلسطينية" مستعمرة الدنجور" أو مدينة "غزة" وإنما تحول ليصبح مصر ذاتها؛ هويتها واختيارها، ودورها، وتلك مسألة وطنية وقومية، إقليمية ودولية، حيث يوضح محمد حسنين هيكل أنه ودون مبالغة تحولت في أوقات لاحقة إلى "مسألة" عالمية تعلقت بها قضايا الحرب والسلام أثناء ساعات ساخنة من زمن الحرب الباردة التي استغرقت معظم النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
وفي هذا الكتاب: 1-محاضر مجلس الوزراء الإسرائيلي عن الفترة من 15 مايو/أيار إلى 31 ديسمبر/أيلول 1948. 2-وثائق الأرشيف الصهيوني المركزي عن نفس الفترة، 3-وثائق وزارة الخارجية الإسرائيلية التي أذيعت سنة 1978 تحت عنوان "وثائق عن السياسة الخارجية لإسرائيل"، 4-وثائق وزارة الخارجية الأميركية والبريطانية عن سنة 1948، 5-يوميات الحرب التي كان "دافيد بن جوريون" رئيس وزراء إسرائيل يسجلها بخطه وباللغة العربية سنة 1948، 6-مجموعة تسجيلات ممتدة ضمن برنامج "التاريخ الحي" الذي رعته الأمم المتحدة والذي اهتم بالصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي، 7-دراسة هامة قام بها عن تلك الفترة الأستاذ "آخي شلايم" والتي رعتها كلية "سان أنتوني" في جامعة أوكسفورد وقامت على نشرها سنة 1988 تحت عنوان "تواطؤ عبر الأردن".
