يمكن القول بأن الصحفي الكبير الأستاذ "محمد حسنين هيكل"، هو أول صحفي عربي إستباح ما كان يعرف بالمحرمات السياسية على الساحة العربية، وراح يغوص في أردانها تدريجياً حتى وجد نفسه غارقاً في حضيضها المعاصر.
إن كتاباته الأخيرة التي تجاوز فيها عصر المحرمات، والتي يمكن أن نطلق عليها الآن اسم (صراحة الصراحة) تكشف لنا وبكل أسف كثير من الخفايا التي يمكن أن نطلق لقب الخيانة على من كان يعرفها ويتستر عليها؛ لقد تبين لما الآن بأن الصراحة التي كان يزعمها في حينه كانت محصورة فقط بما تصرح له الإيديولوجية المزامنة لعصره بالإفصاح عنه، أما صراحة الصراحة التي بدأ بالكشف عنها مؤخراً فقط جاءت في عهد لم تعد لها فيه أية قيمة عملية؛ بمعنى أن ما يقوله الآن لم يعد يعبر عن موقف بطولي أو تضحية يمكن أن تنسب غليه، بقدر ما يخلف في قلب المواطن العربي حسرة جديدة تضاف إلى مجموع الحسرات التي يعانيها.
لهذا رأيت أن أستخلص من مجموع مؤلفاته عملاً واحداً أضعه بين يدي القارئ العربي، بحيث يكون كافياً ووافياً ومتضمناً لأهم الأفكار التي نطق بها ملك الصحافة المصرية دون إطناب أو إسفاف، وعليه، فقد اعتمدت في إعداد مؤلفي هذا على أربعة مراجع هيكلية جاءت على التوالي هي: 1-المفاوضات السرية بين العرب، 2-عواصف الحرب وعواصف السلام، 3-سلام الأوهام - أوسلو وما بعدها، 4-العروش والجيوش، 5-إضافة لتصريحات هيكل في العديد من اللقاءات والمقابلات التي يجريها بين وقت وآخر.
وبالرغم من كل ما حصل فإن هيكل يبقى وبجدارة من أهم المراجع التأريخية لمرحلة هامة وحاسمة من تاريخ الوطن العربي...
