نشأت رواية «الطاووس الأبيض»، التي كُتِبَتْ وأُعيدت كتابتها ثلاث مرات أو أربع على مدى ثلاث سنوات خلال ساعات الفراغ وفي العُطل، من تجارب حياته في ميدلاند ومنذ بداية مسيرته الأدبية أبدى أصالة وعدم اكتراث بالأدب السائد، الذي كان في ذلك الوقت منكباً على «الشكل» في الرواية رافقه فراغ في المحتوى. بالنسبة إلى لورنس لم يكن تأليف رواية عرضاً فنياً لحكاية مُختلَقة ولا مجرد قطعة من التسلية المُثيرة – بل كان «مغامرة ذهنية»؛ تهدف في المقام الأول إلى وضع القارئ في تلامسٍ مع الحياة.لقد مقت أنواع الكتابة «الشكلانيّة» كلها، وأخطاؤه التي ارتكبها مرجعها في الغالب إلى تصميمه الشديد على أنْ يكون صادقاً مع الحياة كما عرفها. وللسبب نفسه تنتهي رواياته كالمعتاد بهدوء، وبدون حسم تقريباً – لأنَّ النهاية الماهرة أو المُثيرة ينبغي دائماً تقريباً أنْ تُزيّف الحياة.
