صاحب هذا الكتاب "التحرير الطاووسي" هو السيد جمال الدين أبو الفضائل أحمد بن موسى بن جعفر بن محمد بن أحمد بن محمد الملقب بالطاووس. لم يعلم تاريخ ولادته، وتوفي سنة 673 بالحلة وقبره بالحلة مشهور، وهو مزار معروف. وقيل بأنه كان فقيه أهل البيت، وكان مصنفاً مجتهداً، عالماً فاضلاً صالحاً زاهداً عابداً ورعاً محدثاً مدققاً، ثقةً ثقة، مشاعراً، جليل القدر، عظيم الشأن من مشايخ العلامة ابن داوود. ووصفه صاحب الروضات بقوله: كان مجتهداً واسع العلم إماماً في الفقه والأصول والأدب والرجال، ومن أروع فضلاء أهل زمانه وأتفههم، حقق الرجال والرواية والتفسير تحقيقاً لا مزيد عليه، وصنف تمام اثنين وثمانين كتاباً في فنون من العلوم، واخترع تنويع الأخبار إلى أقسامها الأربعة المشهورة بعدما كان الحوار عندهم في الصحة والضعف على القرائن الخارجة والداخلة لا غير.
وقد عرف أن السيد ابن طاووس هو أول من جمع الأصول الرجالية الخمسة في كتابه (حل الأشكال في معرفة الرجال) ولكن خصّ كتاب الكشي بنوع عناية عندما أورد الأخبار الواردة فيه فنظر في أسانيدها فصحح بعضها وردّ الآخر. إذن فالكتاب "التحرير الطاووسي" هو تحرير لكتاب اختيار الكشي تأليف السيد جمال الدين أحمد بن طاووس الحسني الذي أضاف إليه في المتن والحواشي فوائد كثيرة أيضاً، ثم انتقل الكتاب إلى ولده المحقق الشيخ حسن، فصنّف في تحريره وتهذيبه كتابه المسمى بـ (التحرير الطاووسي) الذي بين يدي القارئ، وذلك لما أنه لم يكن مرتباً أكمل ترتيب، وينقل عنه أنه اقتصر فيه غالباً على التكلم في أسانيد ما له دخل في الرجال من خصوص أخبار (كتاب الكشي) أو الاختيار.
