يتضمن هذا الديوان قصائد متنوعة مشاعر السوداني "محمد المجذوب" الذي استمد إحساسه العميق من الشعر السوداني الذي يعتبره مأخوذ من أعماق هذا البلد فابتعد عن المقلدين التابعين الذين ذهبوا إلى الغرب ورأى بعضهم من الآداب والفنون شيئاً بالغ العظمة فألغوا ما نشأوا عليه من آداب مثلهم في هذا مثل الذين قعدوا في التراث العربي لا يتحركون، قدسوه ولم يستطيع الخروج عليه فكرروه لهذا كتب المؤلف شعره من دون أن يراعي كلا الفريقين معتمداً في ديوانه القافية، إلا قصيدة واحدة منثورة وأخرى لا تلتزم القافية؛ وقد كتب هذا الشعر في الفترة 1941 إلى 1972.
وهذا مقطع نقتطفه من قصيدة "عطر وفي…"… مضى وخلَّف أشباحاً بما وّعّدا… يا ويحَ نفسي أمسى وعد وساقيةٌ… تمُازجُ الفرحَ الموعود والكَمَدا… ليلى يسامرُ حنَّاء تُليحُ بها… كأسي وتُوقدُ من حزني إذا خَمَدا… صدرٌ يُفتِّحُ أوراداً يُلامِسُها… ظِليِّ وشوقىَ في نيرانها ابْتَرَدَا…
