حين نقدم النص الكامل لكتاب "الديوان فى الأدب والنقد" لمؤلفيه عباس محمود العقاد وإبراهيم عبد القادر المازنى فإنها تضع تحت أنظار قراء اليوم- وكثير منهم من الشباب الذي لم يعاصر العقاد ولا المازنى- وثيقة من أهم وثائق النقد العربي الحديث, ومعلماً من معالم التطور الأدبي في مصر.
كان المؤلفان ينتويان أن يصدرا الكتاب في عشرة أجزاء, بيد أنه لم يظهر منه سوى جزءين طبع أولهما في يناير وثانيهما في فبراير سنة 1921. منطلق الكاتبين "إنساني مصري عربي: إنساني لأنه من ناحية يترجم عن طبع الإنسان خالصاً من تقليد الصناعة المشوهة, ولأنه من ناحية أخرى ثمرة لقاح القرائح الإنسانية عامة, ومظهر الوجدان المشترك بين النفوس قاطبة. ومصري لأن دعاته مصريون تؤثر فيهم الحياة المصرية, وعربي لأن لغته العربية". وهدف الكتاب (إقامة) حد بين عهدين لم يبق ما يسوغ اتصالهما والاختلاط بينهما".
وتحقيقاً لهذا الهدف صب العقاد نفسه سوط عذاب على شوقي والرافعي, بينما وجه المازني سهام نقده إلى المنفلوطي وشكري. ورغم انفراد كل من المؤلفين بشخصية فكرية مستقلة, ومنهج تعبيري متميز, لن يصعب على القارئ أن يرى أنهما يلتقيان في الكثير, مع زيادة هنا أو نقص هناك, وأنهما ارتويا من نفس الينابيع الفكرية والأدبية, وتلاقت آراؤهما في كبريات المسائل, ومن ثم خرج الكتاب عملاً متسقاً, يكمل فيه كل من الكاتبين صاحبه.
