مولوداً لأبوين من جذور هندية، مترعرعاً في جزيرة إيزابلا الكاريبية التابعة لبريطانيا، ومحصلاً تعليمه الجامعي في إنجلترا، أمضى رالف سنغ البالغ من العمر ثمانية وأربعين عاماً، حياة كفاح ضد عذاب الغربة الثقافية. وبعد أن تم نفيه من وطنه الأصلي، لاذ بفندق عتيق الطراز في ضاحية لندنية، اتخذه مأوى له وعكف على تسجيل مذكراته في محاولة لفرض نوع من النظام على وجود غارق في بحر من الفوضى. مذكرات لا تلبث أن تفتح عينيه وذهنه على زحمة المفارقات الثقافية والأوهام الملطخة لطفولته وحياته اللاحقة: محاولاته الرامية إلى التكيف في المدرسة، حياته الزوجية القصيرة مع امرأة بيضاء متغطرسة. غير أن العودة إلى إيزابلا ومن ثم الانغماس في الأجواء السياسية الحاكمة في دولة باتت حديثاً تتمتع بحكم ذاتي، جعلت جميع أوهامه القومية تتلاشى وتتبدد –وفتحت بصيرته في آخر المطاف على لبّ المشكلة وجعلته يتحرر من أوهامه. رواية تغوص في العمق، ساخرة في الكثير من الأحيان، قائمة على استحضار تجارب ابن أحد المستعمرات في عالم ما بعد الاستعمار.
