مازالت رواياته تلاقى شهرة واسعة و تعد من روائع الكلاسيكيات فى الأدب العالمى، و دخل التاريخ من بابه الواسع بفضل أدبه و مواقفه السياسية المعارضة لـ "نابليون"، و خصوصًا دوره فى قضية "دريفوس" الشهيرة التى أثبتت قدرة المثقفين الفائقة فى التأثير على الرأى العام و توجيهه.
وُلد فى باريس يوم 2 إبريل 1840 لأسرة برجوازية، لكنه أمضى طفولته فى مدينة "إيكس بروفانس" حيث يعمل والده و كان الابن الوحيد لأسرته. بعد وفاة والده عانى مع أمه من أوضاع مالية صعبة أثرت على مساره الدراسى و التكوينى، لذلك فشل مرتين فى الحصول على البكالوريا، و عاش حياة بوهيمية.
برع فى وصف الاضطرابات السياسية و الاجتماعية فى عصره. فى رواياته يعتبر البؤس و الفقر عاملين أساسيين يؤديان إلى الفوضى و الإختلاط و الجنوح و إدمان الكحول و أعمال العنف.
يعتقد أن الإنسان يعبش تحت سيطرة أعصابه و دمه مما يدفعه إلى أفعال لاإرادية.
يعتمد فى أسلوبه على الملاحظة و مشاركة الناس حياتهم اليومية و نقل الوقائع كما هى دون أى زيف و لا تجميل.
