قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".

vاحتوى هذا الكتاب على(101) نصًا مسندًا، منها المرفوع ومنها ما دون ذلك، تناول فيها المؤلف خصلة حميدة، وخلة كريمة.. ألا وهي الحلم. وقد سرد المؤلف مادة الكتاب سردًا متتابعًا؛ بلا تقسيم ولا تبويب، ولا تنسيق بين جزئيات الموضوع الواحد، ولا ترتيب لها في موضع واحد. وقد ذكر المؤلف من القصص والأشعار، والحكايات والأخبار ما يتعلق بموضوع الكتاب، موضحًا ما يمتاز به من يتخلق بهذه الصفة الجميلة من كسب ود الآخرين, ودوام أواصر الحب بينه وبين الناس. ولأن موضوع الحلم يأتي ضمن الأخلاق؛ رأينا المؤلف يذكر من الأحاديث والأخبار، الصحيح وغير الصحيح، مذهبه في هذا أن هذا الباب ونحوه من الأبواب مما يتسامح فيه في إيراد غير الثابت، وهذا مذهب جماعة من المحدثين.
