" الحرب المقدسة " قصة رمزية، تأخذ فيها الصفات والعواطف والأحاسيس أسماء وتقوم بحركات وأعمال وكأنها أشخاص، وبعضهم لهم أسماء هي صفات وردت في صورة المضد وبعضهم وردت في صيغة الصفة. مثل القائد إيمان والقائد محبة – أو مثل القائد الرجاء الصالح إلى آخر ذلك من الأسماء .. وقد وردت أسماء بعض هذه الصفات مرات قليلة في صيغتين.
ولا تتحدث القصة عن نفس واحدة مفتداة بل هي تتحدث بصورة إجمالية " الحرب المقدسة " قصة رمزية، تأخذ فيها الصفات والعواطف والأحاسيس أسماء وتقوم بحركات وأعمال وكأنها أشخاص، وبعضهم لهم أسماء هي صفات وردت في صورة المضد وبعضهم وردت في صيغة الصفة. مثل القائد إيمان والقائد محبة – أو مثل القائد الرجاء الصالح إلى آخر ذلك من الأسماء .. وقد وردت أسماء بعض هذه الصفات مرات قليلة في صيغتين.

ويضع أمامنا " جون بنيان " مجموعات من قوى النفس الإنسانية، ومجموعات من الفضائل ومجموعات من الشرور والرذائل في أسماء بشرية ويظهر الحرب بينها – مبيناً أسباب السقوط والهزيمة للنفس البشرية، وأسباب الرجوع والهداية.
