يعالج هذا الكتاب مفارقات وتضادات محايثة للفكر الغربي حول العنف السياسي والديني، ومتجذرة في اللاهوت المسيحي: الحرية والإرغام: العنف والسلام؛ القسوة والرحمة، سفك الدماء للوصول إلى السلام؛ العنف والإستشهاد؛ الإختيار والكونية؛ القديم والجديد، وحتى الدولة والكنيسة.
فيقارب المدخل التعقيدات التأريخية حول الدين والعلمانية، وحول دور الأفكار في التاريخ، ويفكر في علم الإجتماع التاريخي، كما يعكف على مسألة العنف العادل، ويفكك الفصل الأول لغة خطابة وأيديولوجية الحربين الأميركيتين، بتتبع علاماتهما منذ الأفكار القديمة والقروسطية، والحرية والطغيان، والكونية، والنهضة والتجديد، والإستشهاد والأخرويات.
أما الفصل الثاني فيرمي إلى شرح تداخل الحرب والسلم في التفسير المسيحي، بالعودة إلى المكابيين والمسيح، ويعالج الفصل الثالث مسألة ما إذا كان يتعلق ضمنياً بالجنون كل من العنف الإنتحاري أو الشهيد الإرهابي أو القدرية المسلحة.
من جهة ثانية، يستكشف الفصل الرابع المنطق الذي يجعل الإستشهاد يرغم على التطهير (تطهير الذات والمجتمع والقادة)، ثم يستدعي القصاص من الله.
ويتناول الفصل الخامس العنف الممارس من قبل الممالك أو الدول وداخلها، كما يعالج الفصل السادس مفارقة أخرى وهي إمكانية الحرية في الواقع وهي على خلاف مع الإكراه كما يبدو، أن تتوقف عليه، واخيراً ينسج الفصل السابع خيوط الفصول السابقة، فيبدأ بقسم يحمل عنوان "حداثة" ويطرح سؤال معرفة ما إذا كان عنف الحداثة مختلفاً عن العنف قبل الحديث، ويختتم الكتاب بخاتمة تطرح السؤال الآتي: أما من مستقبل لهذا الماضي؟...
