أحمد حماد الحسيني: هو من الرعيل الأول لعلم الحيوان والتشريح المقارن في مصر.
وُلد «أحمد حماد الحسيني» بمحافظة أسيوط عام ١٩١٢م. كرَّس منذ بداية حياته العلمية جُل وقته واهتمامه لعلم الحيوان؛ فحصل على الماجستير من كلية العلوم جامعة القاهرة، ونال درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة شيفلد بالمملكة المتحدة، وظل يترقى في حياته الأكاديمية حتى تولى رئاسة قسم الحيوان بكلية العلوم جامعة عين شمس. وللدكتور العديدُ من المؤلَّفات، منها: «ثدييات مصر البحرية»، و«طيور مصر»، و«علم الحيوان العام»؛ ومن ترجماته: «العلم في حياتنا اليومية» من تأليف «مونتجومري»، و«الحياة منذ كانت» من تأليف «باركر»، وغيرهما. وقد أطلقت كلية العلوم اسمَه على أحد مدرجاتها تكريمًا لعطائه العلمي.
وعلى الرغم من وفاة الدكتور «الحسيني» عام ١٩٦٤م، فإن إسهاماته العلمية ما زالت تُشكل مرجعًا أساسيًّا للمُتخصص والقارئ العادي.

تختلِفُ الثديياتُ البحريةُ عن الأسماك، وهذا المؤلَّفٌ يبدأُ في مقدمتِه بالتعريفِ بالثديياتِ البحرية، ثم يتوسَّعُ في أبوابِه الثلاثةِ في دراستِها. تَتباينُ الثديياتُ البحريةُ في أنواعِها وأحجامِها، وتنتمي تلك الكائناتُ إلى ثلاثِ فصائل؛ أوَّلُها الفصيلةُ الحوتية، وتندرجُ تحتَها الحيتان والدلافين. وأمَّا الفصيلةُ الثانيةُ فهي فصيلةُ عرائسِ البحر، وهي من أشهَرِ الفصائلِ التي نُسجَتْ حولَها الحكاياتُ والأساطير، مِثلَ أسطورةِ «عروس البحر» التي تقومُ على تصوُّرِ كائنٍ نِصفُه العُلويُّ امرأةٌ ونِصفُه السُّفليُّ سمكة، وقد بيَّنَ الكاتبُ حقيقةَ هذا الكائنِ مُستعينًا بالصُّورِ التوضيحية. وتأتي سِباعُ البحرِ والفُقَمُ لتمثِّلَ الفصيلةَ الثالثة، التي تقعُ ضمنَ رُتبةِ آكلاتِ اللحومِ التي منها القططُ والكلابُ والدِّببةُ بأنواعِها.
