هو حالة من الصراع النفسي وعدم الارتياح يشعر به الشخص عندما يقوم بسلوكيات أو يواجه معتقدات أو أفكاراً أو قيمًا تتعارض مع ما يؤمن به. صاغ هذا المفهوم عالم النفس ليون فستنغر (Leon Festinger) في عام 1957.
وهو جزء طبيعي من التجربة البشرية، يفسر كثيرًا من سلوكياتها، ويشرح كيف نحاول الحفاظ على الانسجام النفسي وتقليل التوتر الناتج عن التناقض بين أفكارنا وأفعالنا. وفهمه يساعدنا في اتخاذ قرارات أكثر اتساقًا مع قيمنا ومعتقداتنا.
والفرق بينه وبين النفاق أنّ النّفاق سلوك مقصود يقوم فيه الشخص بإظهار قيم أو معتقدات معينة أمام الآخرين، لكنّه لا يلتزم بها في الواقع. مثل: شخص يدعو الآخرين للصدق لكنّه يكذب عمدًا. هنا، السلوك يتسم بالخداع والتظاهر. فهو ينطوي عادةً على وعي الشخص بعدم الالتزام بما يدعيه.
الكتاب محاولة بسيطة لتقريبه لغير المختصين .
