هذا كتاب جديد نقدمه إلى القراء في موضوع جديد وقديم، جديد، حيث إنه يبحث عن التصوف والصوفية، وقديم، لأنه من نفس السلسلة التي كتبنا عنها وعاهدنا الله عز وجل أن نكتب ونتحدث عنها، ونتكلم فيها، ونزنها بيزان الكتاب والسنة، ونضعها في معيار النقد والتجزئة والتحليل ما دمنا أحياء، وإننا كنا نقصد أول ما بدأنا في الكتابة عن التصوف أن نقدم دراساتنا فيه بصورة كتاب متوسط الحجم لا يزيد على ثلاثمائة صفحة، ويشتمل على تاريخ التصوف، بدايته، منشئه ومولده، مصادره وتعاليمه، عقائده ونظامه، سلاسله وزعمائه وقادته، ولكننا رأينا بعد المضي في الكتابة أن الأمر يتطلب أكثر من كتاب.
لذا يأتي هذا الكتاب ليشتمل على نشأة التصوف ومصادره، وقل من تطرق إليها بتفصيل، وكل الكتاب الذين بحثوا التصوف مروا عليها كعابر سبيل، مع أن أهمية المصادر عليها بفارق كبير، حيث إن المصادر والمآخذ كثيرًا ما تحسم النزاع في معتقدات وعقائد، وتجعل تلك المعتقدات والعقائد تابعة لتلك المصادر.
