من تأمل تاريخياً في نشأة التصوف أو الغنوص في البيئة الإسلامية، فسوف يرى أن مؤسسيه ذوي علاقة وطيدة بالسحر فالباحثون وجدوا ثلاثة أشخاص غنوصيون تسموا بالصوفية هم: "جابر بن حيان، وأبو هاشم الكوفي، وعبدك الصوفي" .
أما جابر بن حيان المتوفى حسب ابن أبي أصيبعة سنة 208 هـ، اشتهر باسم كبير السحرة، وأبو هاشم الكوفي "سمي بالصوفي على وجه تسمية جابر بن حيان به، وهو من الغلاة المؤمنين بالحلول، ويسميه الشيعة مخترع الصوفية وينقلون عن الصادق رضي الله عنه أنه قال فيه: أنه فاسد العقيدة-. ابتدع مذهباً يقال له التصوف" جعله مقر العقيدة الخبيثة، أما "عبدك الصوفي" المتوفى سنة 210 هـ "يخبرنا الملطي أن عبدك كان رأس فرقة من الزنادقة"
