يتدفق السرد في هذه الرواية الشيقة بشاعرية وهو يعرض وجهة نظر مؤلفين داخليين اثنين تناوبا على كتابة أجزاء الرواية الثلاثة؛ وهما حلمي وصديقه عيدان. فيتداخل الواقع مع الخيال في السرد المكثف والغني بالتفاصيل، بالإضافة إلى سارد ثالث ضمني هي العجوز قسمة التي ينساب سردها الأسطوري في تضاعيف القصة العامة.
قصة "نود" الحبيبة التي تختلط حقيقتها مع أوهام رأس عاشق، تبدو مثل قصة إطارية تغلّف قصة أعمق، تحكي عن عراق التسعينيات، عراق انسداد الأفق والعدمية، وتراكم الخيبات.
قصة حب مركبة، تغدو فيها أشباح الحبيبة أكثر واقعية من غيرها؛ نادية وندى وأقدار نساء أخريات. وهي في العمق أيضاً رواية، ربما هي الأولى، عن الحي الشعبي الأكبر في بغداد؛ مدينة الثورة "الصدر". جذوره وصراع أبنائه مع مصائرهم.
