يقول مؤلف الكتاب في المقدمة، واصفًا المحتوى والمضمون: هذا الكتاب يضم مجموعة من المقالات التي كتبتها في السنوات العشر الماضية، وكانت ثمرة رحلة قضيتها في صحبة كتاب وشعراء أحببتهم وتعلمت منهم. ولن أحاول الاعتذار لك عن كل منها على حدة، فسوف تعرف بنفسك جوانب القصور والتقصير فيها. ولن أحاول كذلك أن أحدثك عن ظروف كتابتها، فالحديث عن النفس ممل وثقيل. وإنما أحب أن أقول أنها وإن بدت مشتتة أو متناثرة في ظاهرها، فهي تنبع في حقيقتها وغايتها من عاطفة واحدة. تلك هي عاطفة الحب ... الحب الذي أحسست به وأنا أقرأ لهؤلاء الكتاب، والحب الذي مد يدي إلى القلم لأكتب عنهم. وليس معنى هذا أنها تخلو من روح الجد والصبر والحياد الذي تتميز به الدراسات الأكاديمية. فسوف ترى بنفسك كيف أنني لم أدخر جهدًا في الالتزام بما يقتضيه المنهج الأكاديمي من عناء. ولكن معناه أنها تصدر عن العاطفة وتتجه إلى العاطفة، ومن حق القارئ على أن أعترف له بأنني لم استطع أن أكون أكاديميًا على الرغ من أنني من الناحية الشكلية قد سرت في الطريق الأكاديمي إلى نهايته
