المقدسي (000 - بعد 355 هـ = 000 - بعد 966 م)
مطهر بن طاهر المقدسي: مؤرخ، نسبته إلى بيت المقدس.
دل تحقيق المستشرق (كليمان هوار) على أنه مصنف كتاب (البدء والتاريخ - ط) ستة أجزاء، مع ترجمتها إلى الفرنسية، وله بقية ما زالت مخطوطة، وكان المعروف أنه من تأليف أبى زيد (أحمد بن سهل) البلخى، كما في كشف الظنون وخريدة العجائب، إلا أن البلخى توفى سنة 322 وكتاب (البدء والتاريخ) صنف سنة 355 هـ.
وقال هوار: كان مطهر في (بست) من بلاد (سجستان).
وزاد (بروكلمن) أنه توفى فيها.
قلت: ولم أظفر بترجمة له

جمعت ما وجدت في ذكر مبتداء الخلق ومنتهاه ثم ما يتبعه من قصص الأنبياء عليهم السلم وأخبار الأمم والأجيال وتواريخ الملوك ذوي الأخطار من العرب والعجم وما روي من أمر الخلفاء من لدن قيام الساعة إلى زماننا هذا وهو سنة ثلثمائة وخمس وخمسين من هجرة نبينا محمد صلعم وما حكي أنه واقع بعد من الكوائن والفتن والعجائب بين يدي الساعة على نحو ما بين وفصل في الكتب المتقدمة والأخبار المورخة من الخلق والخلائق وأديان أصناف الأمم ومعاملتهم ورسومهم وذكر العمران من الأرض وكيفية صفات الأقاليم والممالك ثم ما جرى في الإسلام من المغازي والفتوح وغير ذلك مما يمر بك في تفصيل الفصول.
وسميت هذا الكتاب بكتاب البدء والتاريخ وهو مشتمل على اثنين وعشرين فصلاً يجمع كل فصل أبواباً وأذكاراً من جنس ما يدل عليه.
