إن رواية الأمواج، التي تقدمها بالعربية الآن للقراء، كانت قد صدرت في عام 1931، فاعتبرها النقاد تحدياً للقراء لأنها كلها مكتوبة بلغة شاعرية مرهفة، حتى إن بعض هؤلاء النقاد قال ان الرواية بأسرها هي بمثابة قصيدة شعرية طويلة .
إن رواية الامواج تقع في اثني عشر قسماً، يبدأ كل قسم منها بوصف الطبيعة قبيل شروق الشمس حتى بعيد غروبها، ثم تنتهي الرواية بجملة واحدة: (الأمواج تتلاطم على الشاطئ). لكأن هذا الوصف للسماء والأرض والبحر هو وصف للحياة من الولادة حتى الموت.
