تتميز رواية الأمواج بأنها تزيل الإختلافات بين الشعر والنثر، الأمر الذي يسمح لها بالإنتقال بين شخصية وأخرى حين تقدم مونولوجها الداخلي الذي ختلف عن مونولوج الشخصية الأخرى.
يكسر الكتاب أيضاً الحدود بين الناس، فقد كتبت وولف في مذكراتها أن الشخصيات الست لم يكن مقدّراً لها أن تكون منفصلة عن بعضها، وإنما أن تُرى على أنها وجوه للوعي الذي يضيء شعوراً بالإستمرار.
لم تُطلق وولف على الأمواج مصطلح رواية، بل سمّتها "قصيدة مسرحية"، وتقصد ولف ربما دمجها بين اللغة الشعرية المجازية وخصائص المسرح في عرض الشخصيات.
