«أبو حيَّانَ التوحيديُّ» أديبٌ وفيلسوفٌ قدير، لم يَحْظَ بالقدرِ الكافي من الاهتمامِ بعِلمِه وأدبِه في حياتِه، حتى إنَّه أَحرَقَ أغلبَ آثارِه قبلَ وفاتِه فلم يصِلْنا مِنها سِوى القليل. وكانَ واحدًا من أهمِّ تلكَ الآثارِ الباقيةِ الكتابُ الذي بينَ أَيْدينا اليوم، والذي كانَ لكتابتِه حكايةٌ حكَاها «أحمد أمين» (وهو أحدُ محقِّقيهِ)؛ فلقد كانَ «أبو الوفاءِ المهندس» صديقًا للتوحيديِّ ومُقرَّبًا لأحدِ الوزراء، فقرَّبَ «التوحيديَّ» إلى هذا الوزير، وبعدَ سبعٍ وثلاثينَ ليلةً مِنَ السَّمَرِ بينَ الوزيرِ و«التوحيديِّ»، طلبَ «أبو الوفاء» من «التوحيديِّ» أنْ يقصَّ عليه ما دارَ في ذلك السَّمَرِ وإلَّا أبْعَدَه وأوقَعَ به العقوبة، فما كانَ مِنْه إلَّا أنْ وضعَ تلك اللياليَ بالفعلِ في هذا الكتابِ الذي سمَّاهُ «الإمتاع والمُؤانسة».
سَمرٌ أَخرجَ لنا سلسلةً مِنَ الموضوعاتِ الشائقةِ لم تخضعْ لترتيبٍ أو تبويب، اشتملتْ على طرائفَ مُمتِعة، واعتُبِرتْ في مُجمَلِها مِرْآةً لبلادِ الرافدَينِ في النصفِ الثاني مِنَ القرنِ الرابعِ الهجري.
