يتصف الاطفال المضطربون سلوكيا وانفعاليا بعدم القدرة على اقامة علاقات صداقة مع الافراد المحيطين بهم، لذا فإننا نرى ان بعضهم انسحابى لا يميل الى التفاعل مع الآخرين، ومثل هذه العزلة الاجتماعية عادة ما تكون مفروضة عليهم من ذواتهم. إضافة إلى ذلك هناك عوامل تساهم فى ابتعاد الآخرين عن هؤلاء الاطفال المضطربين، حيث انهم يندفعون نحو السلوكيات العدوانية، والايذاء، وعدم المسئولية، والميل الى السيطرة، والمشاكسة. هذا من جهة ومن جهة أخرى فإن جزءا من المسئولية يقع على عاتق الكبار، حيث انهم لا يمضون وقتا بصحبة هؤلاء الصغار، وإن حدث وامضوا جزءا من وقتهم وبادر أىّ من هؤلاء بإبداء سلوك مضطرب، عمدوا إلى عقابه! لذلك فمن غير المستغرب ان يصبح هؤلاء الأطفال مشوشين، محاولين إفساد كل ما يحيط بهم مع أى فرد قريب منهم. وهكذا فالمشكلة لا تكمن فقط فى سلوك الطفل أو فى البيئة المحيطة به، ولكن تنبع أهميتها من حيث عدم وجود علاقة تفاعلية ملائمة بين الطفل وبيئته.
