تبدأ الرواية مع عثور الشرطة على جثة رسامٍ مقتولٍ في منزله الجبلي، جريمة مستحيلة وتفاصيل مربكة وشديدة الإبهام. يبدأ المحقق المسؤول عن القضية في رحلة بحثٍ عن ماض وتاريخ الفنان المقتول. فيما يجد نفسه بشكلٍ مباغت أسير ماضيه الشخصي، قبالة كابوس يراوده كل ليلة عن وادي قريته الذي يلاحقه ويلتهمه كل مرة.
هي رواية عن الفن، الخيال، التصور والإرادة، عن الماضي وتقاطعه الدائم مع الحاضر كصورة، رمز ودافع.
