جاك تاجر: مؤرخ من الروم الكاثوليك، سوري الأصل، ولد بالقاهرة عام ١٩١٨م، تعلم في «الفرير» وتولى إدارة المكتبة الخاصة بقصر عابدين، وقد توفي عام ١٩٥٢م.

أثار هذا الكتاب جدلًا كبيرًا في الأوساط الفكرية عند ظهوره، حيث اتهم البعض جاك تاجر بتعمد تشويه صورة التاريخ الإسلامي، بينما أكد هو رفضه لفكرة احتسابه على أيًا من الطائفتين المسلمة أو القبطية، وأنه سعى إلى المنهج العلمي المجرد من أي تحيز؛ حيث حاول المؤلف — كما يؤكد — دراسة تاريخ مصر منذ الفتح العربي حتى عام 1922م في جوانبه الاجتماعية والسياسية والروحية والدينية وفق منهج علمي محدد وواضح. ويرى بعض النقاد أن كتابة التاريخ قد مرت بعدة مراحل هي؛ مرحلة الكتابة الدينية، والكتابة السردية، والكتابة الأكاديمية الأجنبية والوطنية، والكتابة من منظور الجماعة الوطنية، والكتابة المجتمعية، والكتابة متعددة مستويات التحليل، وأن كتاب جاك تاجر ينتمي إلى المرحلة الثالثة «المرحلة الأكاديمية الأجنبية والوطنية» وهو ما يجعل من الكتاب مرجعًا يحمل أهمية لدى عدد كبير من أقطاب السياسة بما يقدم من مساعدة في فهم الأوضاع الصحيحة داخل المجتمع، في سبيل المحافظة على الوئام بين الأغلبية المسلمة والأقلية المسيحية، خاصة في إطار مشروع الجامعة العربية الهادف إلى ضم أجناس الأمة الإسلامية كلها.
