لقد ترددت كثيراً قبل كتابة هذا الكتاب لما لموضوعه من حساسية واحتمال الانتقاء أو التأويل الخاطئ وأتمنى ألا يحدث ذلك، أعتقد أنه لا مفر من إعادة النظر إلى تاريخ علاقة الأقباط بالمسلمين حتى نستطيع أن نتخطى بعض المشاكل التي أصبحت جزءاً من حياتنا والتي أصبحت سهلة الاستفزاز، إنني أكتب هذا الكتاب بموضوعية قدر استطاعتي، قد يختلف معي البعض، وأتوقع ذلك، فالحقيقة ليست حكراً على أحد، ولكن لعلنا نكون موضوعين في اختلافنا، في غياب الموضوعية تندفع الأكاذيب والأساطير والمغتربات لتملأعقولنا، إن موضوع هذا الكتاب استحوذ على قدر كبير من تفكيري ولسنين عديدة، وها أنا أقدمه للقارئ كمصري أولاً وأخيراً ولعلني أكون وفقت في أن أكون موضوعياً، ولكن الحكم الأخير هو القارئ.
