«وإنَّك لأصنَع من النَّحل، وأطْيَش من فراشة …» إن مِثل هذا التعبير الدارج في عصره قد يُعَدُّ محض مجاز أُريدَ به وصف حالة، إلا أن المهتم بالتراث وخباياه سيرى فيه أكثر من ذلك بكثير؛ فبين البحث في مبنى الكلمة ولحنها، وبين استنباط الكثير عن قائلها من وصفٍ لإنسانيته وعلاقاته وأفكاره؛ ستجد مرآةً لمجتمع بأَسْرِه في جملة واحدة على قدرٍ عالٍ من البلاغة والتكثيف. وإذ كانت «الأمثال» فنًّا أدبيًّا فلكلوريًّا مهمًّا، فقد عمل الباحثون في تراث الشعوب على توثيقها، وكذا كان الحال في شأن الأمثال العربية؛ فنجد العديدين ممن حرَصوا على تجميعها وتصنيفها والاستنباط منها، أمثال «أبي الفضل الميداني» و«الزمخشري» و«طاهر الجزائري» مؤلف الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، والذي جمع فيه عددًا من الأمثال الدارجة وفهرَسها، وأفرد مساحة للحديث عن فوائدها وعلومها.
