ومشى في الطرقات مغموماً يسائل نفسه: أيعود إلى طفله كما ذهب خاوى اليد مما طلب؟... وأخيراً عثر بشيخ قال له:
اذهب إلى طرف المدينة تجد ناسكاً هوماً لا يسأل شيئاً إلا استجاب له... فربما تجد عنده بغيتك!...
فذهب الرجل تواً إلى ذلك الناسك وقال له:
جئتك في أمراً أرجو ألا تردنى عنه خائباً...
فرفع إليه الناسك رأسه بصوت عميق لطيف:
اعرض حاجتك!...
أريد أيها الناسك أن تريني الله!...
فأطرق الناسك وأمسك لحيته البيضاء بيده وقال:
أتعرف معنى ما تقول؟...
نعم... أريد أن تريني الله!...
فقال الناسك بصوته العميق اللطيف:
أيها الرجل!... إن الله لا يرى بأدواتنا البصرية... ولا يدرك بحواسنا الجسدية... وهل تسبر عمق البحر بالأصبع التي تسبر عمق الكأس؟!...
وكيف أراده إذن؟...
إذا تكشف هو لروحك...
ومتى يتكشف بروحى؟...
إذا ظفرت بمحبته...
فسجد الرجل وعفر التراب جبهته وأخذ يد الناسك وتوسل إليه قائلاً:
أيها الناسك الصالح... سل الله أن يرزقنى شيئاً من محبته...
فجذب الناسك يده برفق وقال:
تواضع أيها الرجل واطلب قليل القليل.
