Salwa Bakr is an Egyptian critic, novelist and author. She was born in the Matariyya district in Cairo in 1949 and studied business at Ain Shams University, gaining a BA degree in 1972 and went on to earn another BA in literary criticism in 1976, before embarking on a career in journalism. She has worked as a film and theatre critic for various Arabic newspapers and magazines.
Bakr's work often deals with the lives of the impoverished and the marginalized. In 1985, she published her first collection of short stories, "Zinat at the President's Funeral", which was an immediate success. She has published several collections of short stories since. Her debut novel is "Wasf al-Bulbul" (1993).

أرانب بيضاء واخرى ذات نقاط تقبع في قفص الشرفه المقام لها حيث يقطن"أسامة الليثى" الموظف رقيق الحال ، ذو المرتب المتواضع والطموحات غير المتواضعة وغير الواقعية أيضا.. هذا الرجل الذي تجسدت فيه صفات الأرنب فلم يجرؤ يوما في حياته على قول (لا) سواء كان في مواجهة امرأته او مديره أو ظروفه ومشكلاته، التى لا يجد سبيلا معها سوى بعض الأحلام وأضغاث المشروعات (الارنبية) التى سوف تتيح له الإنتقال من الفقر إلى يسر الحال، ومعه امراته "حياة" وابنتيه "سامية " و "فاتن" كنماذج أخرى موجودة بالفعل ممن حولهم من جيران وأصدقاء عمل ودراسة ومجتمع كبير يملأ الطرقات والبنايات، وهذا العالم الذي أجادت الكاتبة "سلوى بكر" في تصويره بأسلوب بسيط ممتع لا يفتقد إلى العمق، ذو نكهة فكاهية خفيفة تملأ الأحداث والأسلوب معا في قصتها "أرانب"، التى أتاجت لنا الإطلال على عالم موجود بالفعل ملئ بالأرانب البشرية والحقيقية. وفي هذا الكتاب لم تكن الأرانب وحدها سيدة الموقف بل زاحمتها القطط والكلاب والجمال والعصافير.. كل في قصته .. لتقدم لنا المؤلفة بمجموعتها القصصية لقطات تسلط الضوء بها على الكثير من تفاصيل واقع نراه في الشارع والمواصلات والهيئات الحكومية والجامعات و العلاقات الاجتماعية والأحداث السياسية ، تتيح لنا معها فرصة للتأمل والتمعن والتساؤل.
