يعدّ أحمد شوقي رائدا من رواد الشعر الحديث الذي كانت له بصمات شعرية متميزة أسهم من خلالها في مسيرة الشعر العربي. والكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته يتحدث عن سيرة هذا الشاعر وعن مذهبه الشعري مستعرضاً بعض المختارات من قصائده: خدعوها، ذكرى دنشواي، أبو الهول، أندلسية، دمشق، نكبة دمشق، زحلة، ثم تلا ذلك محطة للوقوف على شعره المسرحي. حيث كانت تجربته تلك تجربة بكراً أراد بها إدخال فن جديد إلى الأدب العربي. وقد جاء في ذلك الصدد حديث مقتضب عن الشعر المسرحي عند شوقي اتبع ذلك باختيارات لثلاث مقاطع غنائية جميلة من مسرحية "مجنون ليلى": وهي "جبل التوباد" و"سجا الليل" و"ليلى".
