يحكى لنا " طه حسين " بعد أن مضى قرابه ألف ليلة من سماع " شهريار " لحكايات وقصص " شهر زاد " وبعد أن غيرت هذه القصص في نفسه فلم يعد ذلك الملك المتكبر المتفرعن ، بل قد أصبح الآن يصيبه شئ من القلق الي ينتج من ظمأ المعرفة ، حيث دفعه ذلك الظمأ إلى أن يبحث عن بعض المعانى والرموز حول هذا الغموض الذى يكتنف " شهرزاد" وما ترويه له من قصص ، فأخذ يتسلل الليالى الطوال ويراقب " شهر زاد " ليجدها غرقة في أحلامها ويحاول أن يكتشف سر عدم راحته فى النوم كل ليله ولكن من أين يأتى هذا الصوت الذى يسبب له هذا القلق ولكنها " شهر زاد " ما زالت مستغرقة في أحلامها وما ينطوى عليها من معان لا يعرفها سواها .
