حفَلَ التاريخ العربي بعلماء أعلام أضافوا للحضارة الإنسانية الكثير، ومن هؤلاء كان الفيلسوف «ابن رشد» الفقيه والطبيب والفيزيائي والقاضي المسلم، المولود في «قرطبة» والذي عاش في وقتٍ كانت الأندلس منارة ثقافية وعلمية وحضارية كبرى بعلمائها ومكتباتها. كان لابن رشد إسهام عظيم في الفلسفة؛ حيث قدَّمَ شروحات للفلسفة اليونانية احتفى بها الغربُ وترجَمَها، وقد رأى ابن رشد أن ليس ثمة تعارُض بين الدِّين والفسلفة فكلاهما ينشد الحقيقة. وهذه الشروح حملت الكثير من فلسفته الخاصة، تلك الفلسفة كانت سببًا من أسباب نكبته المعروفة؛ حيث أُحْرِقت كُتُبه، وتم نفيه بعيدًا عن دياره بعد أن اتُّهِمَ بالزندقة والإلحاد بإيعاز من حساده، وإنْ كان قد بُرِّئَ منها في أواخر حياته. وقد تناول العقاد في هذا الكتاب سيرة هذا الفيلسوف ومحنته التي كان سببها إيمانه بقوة الكلمة وشرفها.
