يعتبر إيفان تورغنيف من أشهر الروائيين الروس في القرن التاسع عشر، إذ أن أعماله تدخل في عمق المجتمع الروسي وتعكس الكثير من جوانبه الاجتماعية والحياتية كما تبرز المشكلات التي كان غارقاً فيها. ولد هذا الروائي الروس في أسرة من أصحاب الأراضي في أقليم أوريل، وعانى الاضطهاد خلال طفولته من أم ظالمة. درس الفلسفة في جامعة بطرسيرج، ثم قصد أوروبا لينهل منها المزيد من المعرفة. انتسب إلى جامعة برلين، ثم عاد إلى روسيا بعد سنتين ليكمل دراسته في جامعة موسكو. نشر في العام 1843 أول عمل له: قصيدة "باراشا" الطويلة، فاستقبلها النقاد استقبالاً حسناً. وفي العام نفسه وقع في حب بولين غارسيا-نياردو، وهي مغنية إسبانية أثرت فيه تأثيراً كبيراً استمر طوال حياته. تبعها في جولاتها الغنائية في أوروبا وأمضى فترات طويلة من الوقت في المنزل الفرنسي الذي كانت تملكه هي وزوجها، وقد قبلا به صديقاً للعائلة.
عاش تورغنيف معظم حياته بعد سنة 1856 خارج روسيا، وأصبح أول كاتب روسي يحمل شهرة واسعة في أوروبا، إذ غدا شخصية مرموقة في الأوساط الأدبية الباريسية. وكان من أصدقائه فلوبير والأخوان غونكو، كما منح شهادة فخرية من جامعة أكسفورد. وهنالك ست روايات لتورغنيف تعكس الحياة الروسية في القرن التاسع عشر وهي: "رودين"، "بيت النبلاء"، "في أمسية العيد"، "دخان"، "الأرض العذراء" و"آباء وبنون" التي هي بين يدي القارئ.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك هناك أعمال أخرى مهمة لتورغنيف، منها: "شهر في الريف" و"لوحات من دفتر صياد".... توني تورغنيف في باريس عام 1883 بعد مرض دام سنة، ودفن في روسيا. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذه الطبعة من روايته "آباء وبنون" تخرج باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية. وتأتي بأسلوب مبسط وبعبارات سهلة دون أن تفقد ذلك العمل الروائي قيمته ومعانيه وعلى ذلك فهي موجهة إلى الناشئة ليكون بمقدورهم الاطلاع على كنوز الأدب العالمي.
