وُلد إيفان تورغينيف في 28 تشرين الأول (9 تشرين الثاني في التقويم الجديد) عام 1818 في مدينة أوريول. وكان أبوه سيرغي نيقولايفيتش يخدم في فوج يلزافيتغراد الذي كان يرابط في أوريول، وتقاعد برتبة عقيد. وأمّه فارفارا بتروفنا، من مواليد لوتوفينوف. وكان إيفان سيرغييفيتش الابن الأوسط من ثلاثة أبناء. والأخ الأصغر توفي في ريعان الصبا، والأكبر يعيش في موسكو. فقَدَ تورغينيف أباه، وهو في السابعة عشرة، إلا أنّ أمّه عاشت حتى بلغت السبعين، وتوفيت عام 1850. في عام 1822 سافرت عائلة تورغينيف إلى الخارج، وزارت، فيما زارت، سويسرا. وأثناء إحدى الزيارات كاد إيفان الطفل ، وهو في الرابعة من العمر، يقع في حفرة الدببة الشهيرة في برن، وربما كان سيدفع ثمناً غالياً لتهاونه، لو لم يفلح أبوه في إخراجه فوراً من هناك. وبعد العودة إلى الوطن أقامت العائلة فترة طويلة في ضيعتها، في قضاء متسينسك من ولاية أوريول. وفيها بدأ تورغينيف يتعلّم على أيدي أساتذة من مختلف القوميات ما عدا الروسية. ومن أوائل الكتب الروسية التي قرأها «روسيادا» لمؤلفه خيراسكوف. وهو مدين بتعرفه على هذا الكتاب إلى واحد من أقنان أمه، كان شغوفاً جداً بالشعر. وفي عام 1828 انتقل إيفان تورغينيف مع والديه إلى موسكو، وفي عام 1834 دخل جامعة موسكو، حيث أنهاها بأطوحة «مرشح». وفي عام 1838 سافر إلى الخارج، وكاد يودى به بحريق شب على الباخرة «نيقولاي الأول» قرب ترافيميونده. وحضر تورغينيف في برلين محاضرات في التاريخ واللّغتين اللاتينية واليونانية وفلسفة هيغل.
