الرواية تتناول النشأة التاريخية لإسرائيل حيث تعرض من خلال ثلاثة فصول كيف تطور الوجود اليهودي على أرض فلسطين وبالتحديد مدينة يافا وذلك على مدار ثلاثة أجيال كاملة منذ عام 1913 وحتى عام 1952.
