جوستاف فلوبير (بالفرنسية: Gustave Flaubert)؛ (12 ديسمبر 1821 - 8 مايو 1880)، روائي فرنسي، درس الحقوق، ولكنه عكف على التأليف الأدبي. أصيب بمرض عصبي جعله يمكث طويلاً في كرواسيه. كان أول مؤلف مشهور له: « التربية العاطفية » (1843 – 1845)، ثم « مدام بوفاري » 1857 التي تمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، والتي أثارت قضية الأدب المكشوف. ثم تابع تأليف رواياته المشهورة، منها: « سالامبو » 1862، و« تجربة القديس أنطونيوس » 1874، ويعتبر فلوبير مثلاً أعلى للكاتب الموضوعي، الذي يكتب بأسلوب دقيق، ويختار اللفظ المناسب والعبارة الملاءمة وقد كانت علاقته بكاوتشوك هانم دعته إلى السفر إلى مصر ومنها إلى اسنا وقد التقاها بالقرب من خان الشناقره أو وكالة شنقير ومعبد اسنا

هذا الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة من الأعمال القصصية القصيرة قد قام غوستاف بكتابتها عند مروره بضائقة مادية وتدور أحداث الحكاية الأولى من الحكايات الثلاث في عصر فلوبير، أما الحكاية الثانية فتأتى فى العصور الوسطى والثالثة في زمن يسوع المسيح. يرى العديد من القراء مدى الإختلاف بين الحكايات الثلاث حيث تدور أحداثهم فى عصور مختلفة إلا أنه يوجد ترابط يجمع الحكايات الثلاثة ببعضها. تعتمد جميع الحكايات على الإلهام البصري في استكشاف موضوع الدين، أو الإيمان الديني لنكون أكثر دقة. تقدِّم المخطوطة المعروضة هنا مثالاً جيداً على الطريقة الفريدة التي كتب بها فلوبير.
