إن دراسة مصطلح فن بلاغي دراسة تاريخية، ترصد هذا المصطلح في مظانه وتستقي الآراء فيه من منابعها الأولى، وتربط بين تلك الآراء التي قيلت فيه ربطًا يظهر تطورها التاريخي، ويحدد معنى المصطلح الذي استقر عليه المتأخرون، هي من الأهمية بمكان، والبلاغة العربية في حاجة ماسة إلى هذا النوع من الدراسة، التي تقدم الفن البلاغي خلال العصور المختلفة، وهذا النوع من الدراسة الذي قل اهتمام أهل العلم به يرينا أيضًا نشأة الفن البلاغي وتطوره خلال القرون، وارتباط مصطلح هذا الفن بالمتقدمين من اللغويين والنحاة كالخليل بن أحمد وسيبويه وأبي عبيدة والفراء والأصمعي، ومن جاء بعدهم كالمبرد وأبي علي الفارسي وأبي الفتح عثمان بن جنى وغيرهم.
وهذه الدراسة - (مصطلح التجريد، دراسة في التاريخ والمفهوم البلاغي)، قد تتبعت "مصطلح التجريد" منذ ظهوره، ورصدت ما حدث له من تطور عبر قرون عدة تمتد من القرن الثاني إلى القرن الثاني عشر الهجري، ووقفت على جهود من نشأ وتطور هذا الفن على أيديهم، وعلى من كان له الفضل في نموه ورقيه، كما أنها وقفت أيضًا على ما أضافه إلى هذا الفن من تعرض لبحثه من أهل العلم لغويين ونحويين وبلاغيين، وأشارت إلى أول من أدخل فن التجريد في "علم البديع" وعدة مجرد محسن بديعي معنوي، وبجانب هذه الدراسة التاريخية لمصطلح التجريد ومفهومه البلاغي، فإن البحث قد اشتمل أيضًا على دراسة نقدية، ومناقشات لبعض البلاغيين فيما قالوه في بحثهم لهذا الفن البلاغي.
